Annexin V-FITC/PI Apoptosis Kit

The Annexin V-FITC/PI Apoptosis Assay Kit provides a fluorescence-based method for the assessment of apoptosis stages. Annexin V is a phospholipid-binding protein that selectively interacts with externalized phosphatidylserine (PS) in a calcium-dependent manner. PS is usually localized to the lobules within the cell membrane but flips outside the cell membrane when early apoptosis occurs. By conjugating Annexin V to FITC, early apoptotic cells showing externalized PS can be easily identified by microscopy or flow cytometry analysis. Propidium iodide (PI) is a nucleic acid dye that cannot penetrate intact cell membranes, but it can enter advanced apoptotic or necrotic cells, where it binds to double-stranded DNA and emits a red fluorescent color. Combining Annexin V-FITC and PI allows researchers to distinguish between viable cells, cells in early apoptosis, and cells in advanced apoptotic or necrotic stages in biomedical research.
