Background

Isochenodeoxycholic acid(isoCDCA) is a bile acid present in human feces and is the main metabolite of ursodeoxycholic acid(UDCA) after oral administration. Studies have shown that isoCDCA has a significant cytoprotective effect on ethanol injury in HepG2 cells. It can alleviate ethanol induced hepatocyte toxicity by inhibiting oxidative stress responses, reducing mitochondrial dysfunction, and regulating the expression of apoptosis-related proteins (such as Bcl-2/Bax). As a characteristic product of UDCA metabolism in the intestinal microbiota, its generation depends on the stereoisomer activity of intestinal microorganisms. It not only participates in the regulation of bile acid enterohepatic circulation but may also regulate liver lipid metabolism and anti-inflammatory signaling pathways by activating the fenitol X receptor (FXR) or G protein-coupled bile acid receptor (TGR5).
