Background

Ganglioside GM1 (CAS No.: 37758-47-7) is a monosialylated glycosphingolipid abundantly localized in the plasma membranes of vertebrate cells, particularly enriched in neuronal lipid rafts, where it functions as a key modulator of membrane-associated signaling processes. As a prototypical ganglioside, GM1 interacts with multiple receptor systems, including neurotrophin receptors such as TrkA and TrkB and components of the GDNF receptor complex, thereby influencing downstream signaling pathways such as ERK1/2 and regulating calcium influx and neuronal differentiation. It is also recognized as a functional receptor for cholera toxin and certain bacterial enterotoxins, facilitating studies of toxin entry and host–pathogen interactions. Functionally, GM1 exhibits neuroprotective properties by attenuating excessive NMDA receptor activation, suppressing oxidative stress, and modulating apoptosis and autophagy, making it highly relevant for investigating mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disorders. In addition, its role in immune cell regulation, including modulation of T cell apoptosis, expands its utility in immunological research. GM1 is widely applied in in vitro and in vivo models to study neuronal growth, synaptic plasticity, and disease pathology in conditions such as traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and Huntington’s disease, with experimental concentrations or dosing regimens typically adjusted according to specific assay requirements and study objectives.
