Saxagliptin Hydrochloride
Saxagliptin is a selective, reversible dipeptidyl peptidase‑4 (DPP‑4) inhibitor for type 2 diabetes. DPP‑4 normally rapidly degrades GLP‑1 and GIP; after inhibition, active circulating incretins increase, enhancing glucose‑dependent insulin secretion during meals while suppressing glucagon secretion from α cells and reducing hepatic glucose output, thereby improving fasting and postprandial blood glucose. Its main active metabolite, 5‑hydroxysaxagliptin, also has DPP‑4 inhibitory activity. Overall, it has a low risk of hypoglycemia, but large outcomes studies suggest a slight association with an increased risk of hospitalization for heart failure.
