Background

Phytohemagglutinin (PHA-M) is a phytoagglutinin widely present in the seeds of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), mainly concentrated in the parenchyma cells of the seed cotyledon. PHA-M is a potent T cell activator that can non-specifically stimulate T lymphocyte proliferation and activation. In addition, it was found that PHA-M stimulated human monocytes to induce choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) mRNA expression and significantly enhance acetylcholine (ACh) synthesis. This property makes PHA-M has important application value in neuroimmunology research, and helps to explore the interaction mechanism between immune cells and nervous system.
