Pantoprazole Sodium
Pantoprazole is a benzimidazole proton pump inhibitor (PPI) and an irreversible inhibitor of H⁺/K⁺‑ATPase.[PMC3079481] After oral administration, it is protonated in the acidic environment of the secretory canaliculi of parietal cells and converted to an active sulfenamide, which forms covalent bonds with cysteine residues of the pump protein, inhibiting basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion. Acid suppression persists until new pumps are synthesized and is associated with standard treatment of acid-related diseases (GERD, peptic ulcer, etc.). Long-term use is associated with hypergastrinemia, ECL cell hyperplasia, and increased risks of fractures and infections.
