DL-Serine
DL-Serine (CAS No.: 302-84-1) is a racemic mixture of the non-essential amino acids D-serine and L-serine, widely recognized as a fundamental metabolite in biological systems and extensively utilized in biochemical and molecular research. As a small endogenous amino acid derivative, DL-serine participates in diverse metabolic processes and has been characterized as a natural ligand and allosteric activator of pyruvate kinase M2, implicating it in the regulation of glycolytic flux and cellular energy metabolism. Experimental studies have demonstrated that DL-serine exhibits antiviral activity against tobacco mosaic virus by interfering with viral replication mechanisms, making it a useful tool compound in plant virology and pathogen–host interaction studies. In vitro investigations suggest that its modulatory effects on enzyme activity and viral processes typically occur within micromolar concentration ranges, although experimental conditions may vary depending on the model system. Owing to its defined composition and stability, DL-serine is also employed as a reference standard for quantitative analysis and quality control in biochemical assays. It is commonly applied in cell-based systems and enzymatic studies to explore metabolic regulation, signal transduction pathways associated with pyruvate kinase M2, and antiviral screening paradigms, with concentrations or dosing regimens adjusted according to specific experimental objectives.
