Clonidine is a selective α2-adrenergic receptor agonist that can reduce sympathetic nervous activity and decrease peripheral vascular resistance and heart rate by activating central α2 receptors. Studies have shown that Clonidine is commonly used to investigate autonomic nervous system function, cardiovascular regulatory mechanisms, and pain signal transduction pathways; its pharmacological mechanism involves inhibition of central norepinephrine release.
