Background

Azamethiphos (CAS No.: 35575-96-3) is an organophosphate insecticide mainly used as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor in biomedical research and drug development. Through covalent phosphorylation of acetylcholinesterase, it effectively inhibits the function of this enzyme, leading to the accumulation of acetylcholine in cholinergic synapses, thereby triggering uncontrolled neuronal excitation and ultimately causing paralysis and death of the target organism. Azamethiphos is widely used in Atlantic salmon farming to control sea lice parasites, and has shown acute toxicity to European lobster larvae, including inducing mortality and locomotor impairment. Although specific IC50 or EC50 data are lacking, the activity level of this compound is generally in the nanomolar to micromolar range, similar to other acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. In experiments, Azamethiphos is used in various cell and animal models, with research concentrations typically adjusted according to the experimental objectives and design. As an important tool for studying acetylcholine signaling pathways, it helps deepen the understanding of the neurotoxic effects and resistance mechanisms of aquatic pests.
