CD7 is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein with a molecular weight of approximately 40 kDa, also known as gp40. As a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily, CD7 is expressed on T cells, natural killer (NK) cells, thymocytes, hematopoietic progenitor cells, and weakly on monocytes. In addition, CD7 is also expressed on acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and some acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells. Crosslinking of CD7 induces a calcium flux in T lymphocytes, an effect that may result from the interaction of its cytoplasmic domain with phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3-kinase). Meanwhile, CD7-mediated costimulatory signaling promotes cytokine secretion and regulates cell adhesion processes.
