Background

3-Hydroxypyridine (CAS No.: 109-00-2) is a pyridine-derived small molecule structurally analogous to vitamin B6 and originally isolated from bamboo grass, widely utilized as a biochemical probe in studies of coenzyme-related metabolic pathways and redox biology. Owing to its similarity to pyridoxine-like scaffolds, it can participate in or modulate pyridine-dependent enzymatic processes, making it valuable for investigating the influence of vitamin analogs on cellular metabolism. This compound has been reported to exhibit antioxidant properties through free radical scavenging and modulation of oxidative stress-associated signaling pathways, while also functioning as an endogenous photosensitizer in skin cells, where UVA/UVB excitation can induce oxidative stress, inhibit cellular proliferation, and trigger apoptosis. Additionally, 3-hydroxypyridine demonstrates inhibitory activity against DNA topoisomerase IIβ and suppresses HIV-1 replication in certain lymphoid cell models, with observed bioactivity generally occurring in the nanomolar to micromolar range depending on the experimental system. It is therefore frequently employed in in vitro and cell-based assays to study oxidative stress mechanisms, photobiology, antiviral responses, and enzyme inhibition, as well as in exploratory pharmacological research, where experimental concentrations are selected according to specific assay conditions and study objectives.
