MitoPQ
MitoPQ (CAS No.: 1821370-28-8) is a mitochondria-targeted redox cycling agent designed to selectively enhance superoxide production within the mitochondrial matrix, primarily through interaction with the flavin site of complex I in the electron transport chain. Functionally derived from a lipophilic cation moiety that facilitates membrane potential–driven accumulation in mitochondria, coupled to a redox-active paraquat core, MitoPQ enables controlled induction of mitochondrial oxidative stress by promoting electron transfer reactions that generate superoxide. This compound is widely utilized as a chemical biology tool to investigate mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) dynamics, redox signaling pathways, and the contribution of oxidative stress to cellular dysfunction and disease pathology. Its activity is typically observed in the nanomolar to micromolar range depending on cell type and experimental conditions, reflecting its efficient mitochondrial targeting and redox cycling capability. MitoPQ is particularly valuable in studies of mitochondrial dysfunction, antioxidant defense mechanisms, and ROS-mediated signaling in both in vitro cell-based systems and in vivo models, where dosing and exposure parameters are adjusted according to specific experimental objectives.
