Glutathione oxidized
Glutathione oxidized (CAS No.: 27025-41-8) is the disulfide-linked dimeric form of the endogenous tripeptide antioxidant glutathione, generated through the oxidation of reduced glutathione during cellular detoxification of reactive oxygen species and peroxides. As a central component of redox homeostasis, it is produced in reactions catalyzed by glutathione peroxidases and can be enzymatically reduced back to the active thiol form by glutathione reductase in an NADPH-dependent process, thereby maintaining intracellular redox balance. The ratio of reduced to oxidized glutathione serves as a widely used biochemical indicator of oxidative stress and cellular metabolic status. Functionally, glutathione oxidized participates in redox signaling pathways, modulation of protein thiol-disulfide exchange, and regulation of oxidative damage responses in diverse cell types, including erythrocytes and models of hemoglobinopathies such as sickle cell disease. In vitro, its biological effects are typically studied across low micromolar to millimolar concentration ranges depending on the cellular system and oxidative context, without acting as a classical receptor ligand but rather as a redox-active metabolite influencing enzyme systems and signaling cascades. It is broadly applied in studies of oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, and antioxidant defense mechanisms, as well as in drug discovery workflows evaluating redox-modulating compounds, with experimental dosing and exposure conditions tailored to specific assay designs and model systems.
