Paroxetine (CAS No.: 61869-08-7) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) widely used to treat psychiatric disorders such as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and panic disorder. Its primary mechanism of action is to inhibit the reuptake of serotonin by presynaptic neurons, increasing serotonin levels in the synaptic cleft, thereby enhancing neurotransmission and improving patients’ mood and anxiety symptoms. In in vitro studies, Paroxetine shows high affinity for the serotonin transporter (SERT), with IC50 values in the nanomolar to low micromolar range. In addition, Paroxetine has been found to inhibit the activity of G protein-coupled receptor kinase 2 (GRK2), with an IC50 of approximately 14 micromolar. In cellular and animal models, Paroxetine is commonly used to study its effects on neuronal growth, synaptic plasticity, and neuroinflammation. The dose or concentration used in experiments typically depends on the experimental design and research objectives. It should be noted that Paroxetine may have adverse effects on fetal neurodevelopment; therefore, its use during pregnancy requires careful evaluation.
