α-Asarone

α-Asarone (CAS No.: 2883-98-9) is a naturally occurring phenylpropanoid predominantly isolated from Acorus species and commonly found in essential oils used in traditional herbal medicine, where it has attracted significant attention in neuropharmacology and metabolic research. Classified as a bioactive small molecule with central nervous system activity, α-Asarone has been reported to modulate neurotransmitter systems, including serotonergic, dopaminergic, and noradrenergic pathways, contributing to antidepressant-like effects observed in preclinical models. Mechanistically, it is suggested to influence neurotransmitter synthesis, release, or reuptake processes, and may also exert neuroprotective effects through antioxidant or stress-response pathways. In addition, α-Asarone has demonstrated inhibitory activity against key metabolic enzymes such as HMG-CoA reductase, as well as interactions with cytochrome P450 isoforms including CYP2D6 and CYP3A4, with reported activity in the low micromolar to millimolar range depending on the target. Beyond its central nervous system effects, studies indicate potential roles in lipid metabolism regulation and radioprotection in animal models.
