Background

Zinc Undecylenate (CAS No.: 557-08-4) is a zinc salt of an unsaturated fatty acid that is broadly utilized as a bioactive small molecule in microbiology, virology, and neurobiology research. It functions as a fungistatic and antimicrobial agent, demonstrating inhibitory activity against fungal species such as Candida albicans, as well as Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria through suppression of biofilm formation and quorum sensing signaling pathways. In addition to its antimicrobial properties, Zinc Undecylenate has been identified as a modulator of viral replication via inhibition of RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), including both wild-type and mutant forms, thereby reducing viral RNA synthesis and lowering viral yield in infected cell models such as Huh7 cells. Mechanistically, it has also been reported to interfere with amyloid-β oligomerization, attenuate oxidative stress through reactive oxygen species scavenging, and inhibit μ-calpain activity, supporting its utility in studies of neurodegeneration and cellular stress responses. Furthermore, its effects on cancer cell proliferation and survival have been observed across multiple tumor cell models, indicating relevance in oncology-related pathway investigations. Typical in vitro studies employ concentrations in the micromolar range, although precise dosing varies depending on experimental design and cell type. Collectively, Zinc Undecylenate serves as a versatile research tool for investigating antimicrobial resistance, viral replication mechanisms, oxidative stress pathways, and cell signaling processes in diverse experimental systems.
