Background

IBMX (CAS 28822-58-4) is a methylxanthine derivative commonly employed in research as a non-selective inhibitor of phosphodiesterase (PDE) isozymes. It inhibits PDE3, PDE4, and PDE5 with IC50 values of approximately 6.5, 26.3, and 31.7 μM, respectively. By inhibiting PDE activity, IBMX elevates intracellular cyclic AMP (cAMP) and cyclic GMP (cGMP) concentrations, thereby activating downstream cyclic nucleotide-dependent protein kinases. Additionally, IBMX antagonizes adenosine receptors, blocking endogenous adenosine-mediated cellular effects. In animal studies, IBMX administration has been shown to modulate drug-induced behavioral sensitization, highlighting its utility in neuropharmacological research.
