Background

Homosalate (CAS No.: 118-56-9) is an organic compound primarily used in biomedical research related to skin protection and cellular responses to ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. As an esterification product of salicylic acid and 3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexanol, Homosalate effectively filters ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation and is an important component in the study of photoprotection mechanisms. Studies have shown that extracellular vesicles released by Homosalate-treated cells can enhance the resistance of other epithelial tumor cell lines under anchorage-independent conditions, highlighting its potential role in cellular communication and adaptation under stress conditions. Experimental results also indicate that Homosalate has anti-inflammatory properties, significantly reducing ear edema after UV irradiation in mouse models. In addition, in vitro analyses have demonstrated its androgenic and anti-androgenic activity in human androgen receptors expressed in yeast systems, as well as anti-estrogenic effects on estrogen receptor α-expressing systems, with active concentrations typically in the micromolar range. Homosalate provides a versatile tool for studying hormone receptor interactions and signaling pathways related to oncology and dermatology. Its applications are typically tailored according to specific cell lines and research designs, thereby revealing the multifaceted biological effects of this compound without making any claims regarding therapeutic use.
