Background

Ertapenem sodium (CAS No.: 153773-82-1) is a long-acting broad-spectrum β-lactam of the carbapenem subclass, inspired by microbial natural products and obtained through semisynthesis, suitable for antibacterial mechanism analysis and compound benchmark controls in biomedical research and drug discovery; it inhibits the transpeptidation reaction and peptidoglycan cross-linking during bacterial cell wall biosynthesis by acylating penicillin-binding proteins, producing concentration- and time-dependent bactericidal effects and inducing a secondary autolytic response. It shows broad-spectrum activity against a variety of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and also covers some strains producing extended-spectrum β-lactamases, while reduced susceptibility may be observed in strains expressing certain carbapenemases; its in vitro activity is typically in the sub-microgram to low microgram per milliliter minimum inhibitory concentration range, and may be as low as approximately 0.12 μg/mL in specific anaerobic strains, with specific performance affected by bacterial species, inoculum size, and experimental conditions; in research applications, it is commonly used in drug susceptibility testing and time-kill kinetics, resistance selection and β-lactamase spectrum analysis, membrane permeability and efflux mechanism studies, and can serve as a positive control in antibacterial screening cascades; in cellular and microbial systems and rodent infection models, it can be used for exploratory pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies, covering infection biology models related to the skin, respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, pelvis, and urinary tract; the concentration or dose used in experiments usually depends on the specific experimental design and research objectives. This material is for laboratory research use only.
