β-Elemene
β-Elemene (CAS No.: 515-13-9) is a naturally derived terpene isolated from Curcuma aromatica and other plant sources, widely studied for its antitumor and neuroprotective properties in biomedical research. It exhibits pro-apoptotic activity in cancer cells and is implicated in the modulation of key signaling pathways, including activation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR axis, which contributes to enhanced cell survival under stress conditions in certain neuronal models. In vitro studies demonstrate that β-elemene can reduce chemically induced cytotoxicity and apoptosis, while in vivo investigations, particularly in spinal cord injury models, indicate that it promotes motor neuron survival, attenuates neuronal apoptosis, and supports functional recovery, potentially through suppression of inflammatory mediators such as interleukin-6 and interleukin-1β. Its biological activity is typically observed in the low micromolar to tens of micromolar concentration range, depending on cell type and experimental conditions. β-Elemene is therefore of interest as a pharmacological tool for studying apoptosis regulation, neuroprotection, and inflammation, and is also used as an analytical reference standard in chromatographic and mass spectrometric applications.
